Dayananda Sarswati founded the Arya Samaj in 1875. He published Satyarth Prakash in 1879. He attached child marriage as being contrary to the vedas. According to him the Vedas were infallible and Hinduism should be purified by returning to Vedas. Arya Samaj condemned a number of religious sites and idol worship. He advocated equal rights for men and women. A large number of schools and colleges (DAY) were started. The medium of instruction in the schools was Hindi, and English was compulsory in the higher classes.
