Removal of soil at a large scale from one place to another by some natural agent is known as soil erosion. It is caused by running water and strong wind. Soil erosion makes land unsuitable for cultivation and the land so developed is called badlands. In the Chambal basin, such lands are known as ravines. In dry areas, particularly in deserts, wind carry with them a lot of top soils and deposit them in other areas. Soil erosion in certain areas has become a serious problem. It does not allow farmers to grow crops and thus affects their prosperity. There are several methods for controlling soil erosion. Reducing flow of water by constructing small bunds and plantation of trees are some methods to check soil erosion. We should make efforts to check it. We must come forward to expedite this programme.
