Being a nurse is an important part of Pakistan’s healthcare; it has been the subject of important historical studies and has become an important issue since 2009. The issue of being a nurse in Pakistan has even become a scholarly discussion amongst academics and physicians.

In 2009 the Pakistani government promised to improve its nursing care. Nursing is a health care job which strives to care for families and individuals. The first nursing school was established in Great Britain in the Saint Thomas Hospital under the supervision of Forest Nightingale. In Pakistan, the four year course of nursing education and training is conducted in schools.

2. There are more than 200 public and private nursing schools all over Pakistan where the young are trained for four years in different fields. Every nursing school comes with its own hostel and it is essential for the students to live in the hostel even though their home might be in the city.

3. This profession is of keen interest to especially female students, and even internationally it is considered as a female profession. Therefore 90 percent of the nursing schools in Pakistan are institutions designed for females. There are only a few male nursing schools.

4. In order to get a nursing degree in Pakistan you have to complete four years of B.Sc from a well-recognized nursing school. In order to get into a nursing school you have to first be eligible in the sense that you should have completed your Intermediate in pre medical.

6. The age should be of 17 to 30 years and at times it could even be till 40 years in special cases. After completing your 3 years the nurses are eligible to apply for midwifery. Midwifery is an 18 months course or 1 year course depending upon whether you do pupil midwifery or RN midwifery.

Course Structure:

Coming to the course structure, well students are trained practically and theoretically for around 4 years. So the B.Sc. is for 4 years. The initial 3 month syllabus is regarding anatomy, physiology, history of nursing, manners, nursing arts and English language is taught to students. After the passing of this period successfully students are promoted to first year and they are taught the following courses: Anatomy, Nursing, Hygienic study, Physics and Islamiat. In the second and third year students are taught Medical nursing, surgical nursing, Nursing arts, Gynecology, Pakistan Studies and human Relations.

Job Opportunities:

There is a small shortage of well trained nurses in Pakistan therefore those nurses which are diploma holders and registered tend to get the job easily. It is a fact that more than 1000 nurses get diploma training from public and private nursing schools all over Pakistan. Qualified and skilled nurses also accept job offers that come from abroad like Middle Eastern countries where the demand for female trained nurses is high.

These countries offer lucrative job offers. Hospitals in Pakistan locally do offer attractive salaries and fringe benefits for example Medical, Gratuity, Annual leave and etc. to the right candidate. Nurses who are willing to work for on rotational duties are given the job easily. So over all it can be said that there are numerous job offers locally which can be found through a search however there are job opportunities overseas as well which can be pursued.

There are also work opportunities that nurses can pursue privately. Trained nurses do not just get employed in hospitals but they can also look after sick individuals in their homes. This is kind of known as private practise of nurses. Those nurses who work privately have to though work for long hours which might be 12 hours straight. The income of nurses working privately is determined through mutual consent ranging from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 8000, another factor which helps in determining the fees is how sick the patient is.
