The post-Harshavardhana period saw a number of contests among various powers of northern and southern India. One such struggle was waged between the Cholas and the Chalukyas. In fact, the expansionist policy followed by the Cholas made their struggle with the Chalukyas inevitable.

As regards the causes of the struggle between the Cholas and Chalukyas three areas may be identified; such as:

(1) Annexation of Vengi by the Cholas.

(2) Domination over the kingdom of Ganga.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

(3) Control over the Tungabhadra valley .

In this struggle neither of the two was successful. If Chalukya was successful at a particular time, the very next moment they were defeated by their rival.

However, the result of the contest was disastrous for both the powers.
