80% cotton is grown in Khandesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada regions. The important districts are Jalgaon, Akola, Yavatmal, Osmanabad, Nanded, Aurangabad, Wardha, Nagpur etc. Cotton culture has responded to black soils, favourable climate and demand of cotton in the state.
Gujarat
This state is the second largest producer of cotton in India. The cotton growing districts are Vadodara, Surendernagar, Bharuch and Ahmedabad.

Punjab.
The state has made rapid progress in the production of cotton. It has emerged as an important state for producing cotton especially long staple cotton. The important cotton producing districts are Ferozepur, Faridkot, Mukatsar, Bathinda, Sangrur, Ludhiana etc. Fertile soils, irrigation facility and suitable climate favour cotton culture in Punjab.

Kurnool, Anantpur, Adilabad are major cotton producing districts.

Haryana.
In the production of cotton, Haryana state has come up as a major producer in India. It grows long staple cotton. The districts of Hissar, Jind, Sirsa, Rohtalc etc. are the most important.
Karnataka.
Raichur, Belgaum, Dharwar, Bijapur, Gulbarga and Bellary are the main districts, where cotton is grown.

Tamil Nadu.
Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram are known for cotton cultivation.
Trade.
India exports some cotton. In 1998-99, the country earned Rs. 224 crores as foreign exchange by exporting raw cotton.
