The famous and longstanding dynasty of the Western Chalukyas was coming to a close during the reign of Somesvara IV. This king’s reign ended in 1200.

That year marked not only the end of the Chalukyan power but also the rise of the successor power of the Yadavas of Devagiri.

Medieval Hindu dynasties had invariably claimed noble ancestry; and of such noble lineages, the one deriving from the family of Yadu, from whom Sri Krishna himself was descended, was one of the most fashionable claims. Such claims were deemed to be necessary for their respectability and stability.
