Rajendra II, son of Rajaraja Narendra, married a Chola princess, daughter of the Chola emperor Rajendradeva II and became more Chola than Chalukya. In 1071 when Adirajendra Chola emperor died Rajendra II (Eastern Chalukya) seized the Chola throne and became Chola emperor with the title Kulottunga I. Soon after this i.e., in 1076 Vijayaditya VII died.

Kulottunga I combined the Chola and Eastern Chalukyan kingdoms under one banner and appointed his son as viceroy in Vengi. His sons functioned as viceroys one after another in Vengi, but among them Bikrama was the most famous and using the Eastern Chalukyan kingdom as a base the Cholas invaded Kalinga twice.

The perpetual struggle for supremacy between Vikramaditya VI Western Chalukya and Kulottunga I Chola ultimately ended in the Vengi kingdom slipping out of Chola hands.
