Sludge & Rain/Storm water drainage

(a) Street gullies – Placed along the curbside, discharge into the sewerage system.

(b) Soak ways in permeable ground.

(c) Surface water drains should be connected to the sewers through a sediment chamber.

(d) They are less hygienic as they are open & exposed to atmosphere.

(e) They should be laid at such a gradient that self cleaning velocity is developed.

Shapes of Surface Drains:

(a) Rectangular Surface Drain:

Suitable for carrying heavy discharge.

(b) Semicircular Surface Drain:

Stoneware, concrete, asbestos cement pipes. Suitable for small streets.

(c) U-Shaped surface Drain

(d) V-shaped surface Drain:

They will carry fluctuating discharge without depositing solids at any point.
