Shifting cultivation or ‘Sweden farming” practiced widely in Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya by Tribal’s. Jhuj land is cleared of bamboo jungle, the slashed vegetation is fired, and a mixture of seeds planttd. Hill rice, maize, millets, cotton, vegetables, and bananas are typical crops.

In some of the more remote parts of the Western Ghats of Karnataka and Kerala, in upland Orissa and Madhya Pradesh similar system is practiced. Shifting cultivation has lower per hectare yield and causes immense damage to the environment. Efforts are being made to replace it by sedentary farming.
