Besides the primary producing units, there are a number of secondary producers of steel which include foundries, rolling and re-rolling mills. There are more than 4,000 iron foundries manufacturing bars, spring steel, bolts, nuts, rivets, wires, wire nails, tin plates, steel castings, rods, hoops and light structural’s, etc.

These foundries are mostly concentrated in and around the urban centers like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Agra, Faridabad and Batala etc. Also there are over 200 re-rolling mills with capacity of 77 lakh tones. These mills arc scattered throughout the country, especially in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam and Kerala.

These mills mostly manufacture bars, rods, hoops and light structurals. During 1998-99 secondary producers produced 1.64 million tones of pig iron (54.84 per cent of total pig iron production) and 13.91 million tones of finished steel (58.4 per cent of total steel production). The total production of steel castings during this year amounted to 3.73 lakh tones.
