What are the causes of Population Explosion or Population Problem in India? Population of India is growing very rapidly. Although, India occupies about 21% of the total land area of the world but the country at present has to support nearly 16 percent of the total population of the world.

Thus, the pressure of population on land is very heavy in India. In 1901, the total population of India was 23.6 crore and in 1991 it increased to 84.4 crore showing an increase of 60.8 crore during the last 90 years. It has crossed one billion masks by the turn of this century.

Causes of Increase in Population

The causes of increase in population can be discussed under two headings

1. Increase in Birth Rate

2. Decline in Death Rate
