The tropical grasslands (Savannas) lie between 10° to 30° north and south of the equator in the interior of the continents in the trade wind belt. They are known as llanos in the Orinoco basin and Campos in the Brazilian highlands in S. America.

Natural environment (i) Range of temperature is higher than in the equatorial region.

(ii) Rainfall occurs in the short summer season; winters are cool and dry.

(iii) The grass (elephant grass), is tall, coarse, spiky and is neither juicy nor nutritive.

(iv) Scattered deciduous trees are found.

(v) They are known as the ‘big game country’ as a large variety of animals – both herbivores and carnivores such as zebra, giraffe, deer, lion, leopard, and tiger are found. People earlier hunted them.

(vi) Sanctuaries have been set up to protect the animals from extinction and hunting has been banned.
