He had a real passion for liberty. But liberty with him was synonymous with pure individualism; it meant at bottom the right of each man to live as a law unto him.

He is from the first to the last great iconoclast. He became a source of strength and inspiration to the people of Europe because of his passionate devotion to liberty, his interest in the past glories of Italy and Greece, and the prophetic outburst that, “blood will be shed like water and tears like mist, but people will conquer in the end.”
