Ibrahim ascended the throne on 27 July, 1550 after he had been assured of the support of all classes of people Hindus as well as Muslims. He was the first Qutb Shahi ruler who assumed the title of ‘Shah’.

He was a benevolent ruler who did not like to indulge in wars to extend his territory. His first concern was to restore law and order which had suffered at the hands of his predecessors particularly Subhan.

Though his ambition was to confine himself to Tilag or Telugu speaking areas only but circumstances forced him to be involved in various wars. In alliance with Husain, son and successor of Burhan Nizam Shah, he laid siege to Gulbarga but could not capture it due to its strong fortifications.

He now approached Ramaraj for help but on latter’s reluctance, Ibrahim withdrew. Now it was the turn of the Bijapur ruler Ali to seek Vijayanagar ruler’s alliance in attacking Ibrahim Qutb Shah.
