The Treaty of Versailles recognized the independence of Poland and Czechoslovakia and forbade Germany to revive her customs union with Austria. Under the treaty Germany was also required to abrogate the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and other agreements with Russia and to withdraw her troops in the east within its new frontiers. The German territory West of the Rhine together with the bridgehead, was to be occupied by the Allied troops for a period of 15 years.

If Germany carried out her obligations faithfully, the bridgehead at Cologne was to be evacuated after 5 years, that at Coblenr after 10 years and that at Mainz after 15 years. However, if Germany misbehaved the occupation could be prolonged. But all the troops were actually withdrawn by 1930.

The treaty also provided for the creation of the League of Nations with the primary object of maintaining international peace. The treaty also provided for an International Labour Organization.
