According to Oparin, the organic molecules after having come into existence became organised into supramolecular structures of some types. These supramoleculer structures are called coecervates. A coecervate may be defined as a solution made up of high molecular weight chemicals.
According to Oparin, under certain special circumstances the coecervate separates into two phases – The sol phase and the gel phased. The gel phase in contact with aqueous solution shows great osmotic activity and brings about oxidation, reduction and polymerisation. Oparin called these systems as protobiont. It is these protobiont which subsequently must have given rise to protoplasm.
