Jama Masjid of Delhi was built by Shah Jahan during the period 1650-56. It is one of the most elegant mosques of its kind. It is standing on a raised platform. It has four minarets in the four corners. The purpose of large open space in front of the masjid is to accommodate as many as 10,000 people at a time. A lofty gate, tall, splendour minarets, and a series of domes are the features of Jama Masjid. It was built at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs at the time. It is also quite impressive and pleasing. This was constructed for the use of worship by the royal family. This mosque is made of red sandstone. It has three broad gates. High towers and dome are its other special characteristics.
