The architectural work at Mahabalipuram was done under the patronage of the Pallava King Narasimhavarman Mahamalla. 0f great significance is the rock-cut temples called ‘Seven Pagodas (,Saptaraha) at present Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram of the ancient times) on the sea-coast of Madras (presently Chennai).

The sculptors of the Pallava period also showed their skill in carving out figures. The greatest achievement of the Pallava sculptors was the carving out of an enormous granite boulder the representation of the ‘Descent of the Ganges’ from the Himalayas.

The hugeness of the pallava sculpture is understood from the life-size figures of men and animals.

It may also be pointed out that being influenced by the Amaravati school of sculpture (of the Kushana days) the Pallav; sculptors used to work out details of figures with jeweler precision.
