It is worthwhile to remember that the cycle of erosion in the karst regions was basically outlined by Cvijic and it was, as a matter of fact, based on the conditions prevailing in the Dinaric karst (limestone region).

Truely, speaking, it was the only fully developed karst that was studied in detail. However, in other part£ of the world in the so-called karst regions the conditions differ widely.

It is admitted that comparable conditions exist in the limestone regions in Britain. In certain regions, different stages of the karstic cycle are evidenced.

It may be pointed out that there are great variations in karst topography. These differences are largely related to such variables as lithology, structure, climate, and stage in the karst cycle.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The effects of some of these variables are clearly discernible if we compare the karst regions of different areas in the U.S.A. It is also to be noted that no adequate attention has been paid to the karst features of the very dry or very cold regions.

On the contrary, most serious studies have been carried on in the humid or sub-humid regions of the tropical or temperate lands. However, the basic reason for the neglect of these regions is related to the absence of karst features.

Climate may also be considered to be one of the factors for creating differences in different karst regions located in various climatic regions of the world.
