The Directorate of Secondary Education looks after the management of secondary school education in the state. The Director of Public Instructions (Schools) [DPI (S)] is in charge of this Directorate. He is also the Drawing and Disbursing Officer (D.D.O) for the establishment and officers at the Headquarters.

The D.P.I (S) is accountable to the Education Secretary in all matters concerning secondary education. He is to implement the important educational policies and programmes of the Government and also give suggestions to the Government concerning any aspect of school education. The D.P.I (S) is assisted by four Deputy Directors, who are assisted by Assistant Directors, Administrative Officers etc.

1. Deputy Director School Administration (D.D.S.A.)

He is the in charge of school administration. He deals with all matters relating to transfers, promotions, seniority, release of grades and rationalisation of posts of teachers of all categories-C & V Masters, lecturers, headmasters. He is assisted by A.D.S.A (I) and A.D.S.A. (II). The A.D.S.A (I) normally deals with male non-gazetted secondary staff, whereas A.D.S.A. (II) deals with the administrative matters relating to the female staff.

2. Deputy Director Adult Education

He is in charge of all matters relating to adult education in the state. He is assisted by Social Education Officers and Project Officers.

3. Deputy Director Vocationalisation (D.D.V)

The D.D.V. deals with all matters relating to vocationalisation of education. He is also Advisor, Technical Education in the state. He is assisted by four subject specialists.

4. Deputy Director Books (D.D.B)

He deals with matters relating to grant-in-aid to private schools. He is assisted by an Assistant Accounts Officer (A.A.O) from the finance department.

5. Additional Director Youth Programmes

The Additional D.P.I looks after the development of sports and physical education activities. He is assisted by a Youth Welfare Officer (Y.W.O.) and a Sports Officer.

6. Administrative Office

He deals with all administrative matters relating to P.E.S.I and II officers. He is assisted by Registrar Education (RE) who is also a drawing and disbursing officer to the three Directorates and S.C.E.R.T.

7. Planning and Works.

The D.D.S.E. heads planning and works. He is assisted by an officer on Special Duty for planning and works -O.S.D (P & W).

8. Statistical Officer

He deals with all types of statistics, data collection, processing, analysing and reporting. He also publishes the annual reports of the Education Department.

In addition to the functions of the Secondary School Directorate, a few more branches are being created to meet the increasing needs of the Directorate. In order to improve the quality of education, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been created. It works under a senior-most officer of the education department.
