Cyclops is also known as water flea. It is a crustacean present in fresh water. It is very small measuring about 1mm in length. It has 1. a pear shaped semi-transparent body 2. a forked tail 3. two pairs of antennae 4. five pairs of legs 5. a small pigmented eye. The average life of cyclops is about 3 months.

Public health importance

1. It is an intermediate host of Dracontiasis or guinea worm disease. This disease is a Public health problem in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Tamilnadu.

2. It is also an intermediate host in fish tape worm-Diphyllo bathroom Latium. It is rare in India.

Control

1. Physical methods like straining of water or boiling of water to 60°C.

2. Chemical methods by using chlorine, lime or abate.

3. Biological methods by using barbell fish or gambusia fish which feed on Cyclops.
