Asoka was successful both as a man and as a ruler. He kept intact the Empire lie inherited from his father.

Even he extended the boundary of the empire by the conquest of Kalinga. The conquest of Kalinga, however, could not turn him an imperialist.

He gave up war for the rest of his life and became a propagator of non-violence. In the post-Kalinga period Asoka initiated a policy of universal brotherhood.

Instances are plenty how mighty empires dwindled’ into nothingness and monarchs forgotten.

But in India we have a monarch in Asoka who instead of earthly treasures gathered the treasures of wisdom, peace, love and non-violence that have ever since been the proud heritage of India.
