On 1st April 1810 Napoleon married Maria Louisa, the Austrian princess after he, had divorced Josephine. She was daughter of Austrian Emperor Francis II.

After a year of this marriage, Maria Louisa gave birth to a son who was given the title of The King of Rome’. Napoleon entered into this matrimonial alliance due to the following reasons:

1. Josephine had no son and he wanted to have a successor for his vast empire.

2. Napoleon was born in an ordinary family and wanted to matrimonial relations with some royal family to enhance his glory and prestige and Maria Louisa belonged to an ancient respectable Hapsburg family.

3. Metternich, the Chancellor of Austria, had no notion that Napoleon was invincible. Therefore, he was interested in union for the good of his country but his estimate prove wrong as no friendship could ever be established between France and Austria.
