ADVERTISEMENTS:

Satyendranath Tagore was the first Indian civilian.

c. Weaknesses:

The greatest weakness of the civil service as introduced by the British in India was that all appointment was made by the Directors of the East India Company.

The system of nomination could not provide always competent persons in the civil service.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

For, in most of the time the Directors of the East India Company nominated their sons and relatives to the service.

And it may be said that as a result of the system of nomination incompetent persons found their way to the civil service.

This privilege of the Directors, however, did not last for long. When the company’s authorities became aware of the corruption in the recruitment of civilians attempts were made to do away with the practice of nomination.

The system of nomination finally came to an end in 1853 when Charter Act envisaged that all recruitments were to be made through a competitive examination.
