It has been pointed out by historians that both the Sannyasis and Fakirs were basically peasants. This is borne out by the fact that they received grants of land for various services they rendered to the local zamindars, in some cases even to the Nawab.

That the Sannyasis and Fakirs had agrarian base is also borne out by the fact that they had close links with the peasants. For the Sannyasis and Fakirs, who sometimes acted as traders, advanced money to the local peasants in times of their need? The revolt of the Sannyasis and Fakirs had an anti-British stance.

For they rebelled against the British in order to restore the privileges of which they had been enjoying for long time. The British curtailed those privileges in order to suppress the Sannnyasis and Fakirs.
