Vivekananda was pained to see the decadent Hindu society caused by the apathy and ignorance of the people.

At the same time he became convinced about the potentialities of the Hindu religion as a binding force to unite the people of India.

In course of time Vivekananda planned a programme for the regeneration of the people.

(1) He set forth the ideal of a new social order based on freedom and equality.

(2) Modernization, according to Vivekananda was a necessity. And this could only be done by borrowing western technical know-how.

(3) Vivekananda strongly argued for education, particularly women education that would rid society of all ailments.

(4) Vivekananda projected the image of a classless society in which the Brahmanas would help elevate the society.
