Maravarman Sundara Pandya II ruled from AD 1238 to AD 1253. The tripartite relations among the Pandyas, the Cholas and the Hoysalas did not change during his reign.

The Hoysala influence in the Pandya country grew and it was not possible for the Pandyan king to resist it. There was a high Hoysala military officer in Tirunelveli in c. 1250; a Saiva- Vaishnava dispute in Tirumayam was settled by another Hoysala general.

His contemporary Rajendra III invaded the Pandyan country and obliged the Pandyan to pay tribute to him but now Vira Somesvara intervened to support the Pandya and earned the title Pandyakula Samrakshaka.
