Though the members of the National Assembly were inexperienced, yet they worked hard for two years and framed a constitution for the country. Hazen has written about this constitution:

“The constitution of 1791 represented an improvement in French government, yet it did not work well and did not last long, it revealed inexperience and poor judgment in several points.”

The National Assembly totally abolished the ancient regime in France and sounded the death-knell of feudalism. It made a complete change in the judicial system of France and established a constitutional monarchy in the country.

But some historians condemn the rule of the National Assembly as it gave birth to mob rule. It was also foolish on the part of the Assembly to separate the executive and the legislature.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The civil constitution of the clergy proved contrary to the interests of the country. It divided the country into two hostile camps and harmed the cause of revolution to a great extent.

Though some of its achievements soon became ineffective, yet the rest proved of lasting importance and benefited the human society greatly.
