After the failure of Lafayette, Dumoureiz was appointed commander of the French Army. He saved the capital by defeating the forces of enemies in the battle of Walmy on 20th August 1792.

This has a great significance in the history of France. Hazen opines that it was a decisive war. It saved the Revolution. Goethe writes about this war:

“From this day and this hour dates a new epoch in the history of the world.”

Dumoureiz made an attack on Austrian Netherlands (Belgium) and established his control, and after some time France overpowered Nice and Savoy. The provinces of Rhine and Metz were also conquered by the French commander.

Thus the republican forces of France gained victory over the armies of the kings during the winters of 1792-93. It affected adversely the speed of the enemies and France achieved a tremendous fame and the victory boosted its prestige.

The National Convention was overjoyed by this victory and thus the republican regime in France was established in place of monarchy.

Results of the Battle of Walmy

(i) It curbed the worsening crisis in Paris.
