Essay on the background of the liberation movement in Africa

The most significant feature of the position of Europe in the post- Second World War was the end of her power to dominate the world.

Within a very short period after the end of the Second World War most of the European empires in Africa collapsed. This was due to a variety of reasons:

(1) The colonial powers of Europe devastated by the Second World War were no longer in a position to continue their hold over their colonies in Africa.

(2) The Second World War considered to be a war waged for freedom of nations and to make the world safe for democracy.

Naturally in the subjugated countries of Africa forces of the freedom movement earned strength.

(3) The setting up of the socialist government in Eastern Europe was also a factor that weakened the power of the imperialist countries of Europe to sustain colonies in far away Africa.

(4) Another important factor that was responsible for the growth of liberation movement in Africa was the solidarity among the peoples of different African countries.

(5) The solidarity played a crucial role, for, a country that became independent actively helped liberation movements in other countries.
