Ereyanga is noted for an attack on Dhara the fort of the Malava king; he captured and burnt it sometime between AD 1069 and AD 1076 He was also credited with other exploits like the capture of Chakrakotta defeating the Chola king, routing the Kalinga army and burning the Baleyapattana.

These successes were possible because of the greatly confused situation which existed in the southern and south eastern reaches of the Deccan due to the Chola- Chalukya conflicts, as also the domest6ic strife in the family of Somesvara I and the confusion in the Chola country following the death of Vira Rajendra.

Ereyanga when his chance came fought against the Chola Kulottunga and sided Vikramaditya VI. In spite of the local successes the Hoysalas could not yet assert their independence openly since so long as Vikramaditya VI ruled the Deccan such a course was unthinkable. By AD 1062 Vinayaditya changed his capital from Sosavur to Dvarasamudra which was to be the capital till the dynasty came to an end.

It is said that the capital was so called because of the construction of a huge tank there by a certain Dora, a Rashtrakuta ruler. Belur, 8 miles away from Dvarasamudra, was used as an alternative capital. During his period the Hoysalas undertook a vast programme of public works and benefactions, and the king was greatly interested in providing irrigation tanks for the peasants, One Santhideva is spoken of as a guru of Vinayaditya.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

This guru seems to have won the admiration and support of the Chalukyan emperor himself. By the end of Vinayaditya’s regin the Hoysala principality had become rich by successful foreign campaigns, the country had benefited by proper encouragement to agriculture; and the neighbouring princes were unable to check Hoysala advance.

Vikramaditya VI was a shrewd man. He knew the Hoysala motivation in their loyalty to Kalyani. So he permitted the Paramara king Jegaddeva to undertake a campaign oif condquest in the south in the course of which Hoysala territory was invaded.

It was in AD 1093 that Jagadeva attacked Dvarasamudra with a view to avenging the earlier Hoysala attack on Dara. This attack was beaten off by Ballala and Vishnuvardhana, sons of Ereyanga.
