The story of India’s struggle for freedom is a story of bravery and sacrifices. The British came to India about 400 years ago as traders. They defeated the Indian kings one by one and became the rulers. The Indians did not like the British rule for long and tried to free themselves. This struggle for freedom continued for about a. century and ultimately we succeeded in winning our freedom.

In 1600 A.D. the British formed a company known as the East India Company for trade in India. They carried on trade in India for several years. They earned a lot of money from Indian trade and became very rich. Slowly the British set up an army in India. At that time, India was-divided into small kingdoms. The kings were weak and were fighting among themselves. The British took advantage of this weakness. They defeated these kings one by one and became rulers.

Some other European powers like the French, the Dutch, the Portuguese and the Danes had also set up their trade in India. The British fought these powers also and became supreme. Gradually they established their rule over whole of India.
