The following factors promote good health in children and adults:

1. Nutrition and balanced diet:

It provides energy for the normal working during the day. Diet provides fuel to the working machinery. It constructs tissues, builds the skeleton, helps growth and development and provides continuous replacement of blood cells, consumed in the metabolic function.

2. Air and sunlight:

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Air provides oxygen, which purifies blood and activates our bodily organs. Fresh air contains more of oxygen, which is needed by the body. The foul air, which contains more of carbon dioxide or nitrogen, produces physical and mental fatigue, heaviness and weakness. Cross ventilation of rooms helps obtaining fresh air and dispelling foul air.

(The sunlight provides life-giving properties and destroys harmful germs.) It adds vigor and vitality to the body. It gives power of resistance to germs. It increases certain minerals like iron, calcium, phosphorus and iodine.

3. Bodily posture:

In the case of children bodily postures are very important for maintaining health. The child should possess own knowledge of correct postures of sitting, standing, walking, reading and writing. He should practice the same.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

In the absence of such practicing, the bodily organs become deformed, the eye-sight weakens, and the nervous system hardens. The major causes of bad postures are malnutrition, bad dress, bad furniture and bad habits. Children should be trained to have correct postures.

4. Physical, exercise, sport, games, athletics, gymnastics, and rhythmic exercises:

These help circulation of blood, stimulate the glands, strengthen the organs, development and growth and promote general health. Details about these are given in subsequent pages.
