The following are the essential components of an efficient school health service: –

1. To keep Records:

Proper health, records of the students should be maintained by the school. These records should be discussed with the parents. A uniform Performa for health records should be made available from the National Health council for this purpose.

The teacher and other staff members must impress upon the children the primary hygienic requirements like cleaning of teeth, eyes, ears, combing, cleaning and cutting of hair, nails, wearing clean clothes etc., which should be according to the prevailing season. If any abnormal symptoms are detected then priority should be given to inform the parents promptly.

3. Role of the parents:

Today’s parents should have the basic knowledge of nutrition, health problems and changing physical needs of the growing child. Children these days are over-burdened with studies and mental work. Proper nutrition and exercise will help the child to be healthy.

4. Psychological services:

Sometimes children suffer from in­feriority complex due to certain psychological problems. If Psychological counseling is offered by the institutions about the mental retard ness, prevention of mental defects, development of complexes, etc., will encourage the child to be alert and healthy which will lead to his proper physical and mental development.

5. Provision of First-aid and emergency care:

Every educational institution should be equipped with the first-aid amenities from the students funds. Staffs’ members of every school should be trained for giving emergency and first-aid help to the students when needed.

First-aid boxes should be provided in all the institution. It is desirable to set apart a separate medical room for the purpose.

Medicines, ointment, glucose, bandages, cotton, etc, are some of the important items for the first-aid box. In addition, a bed can be provided for the patients to lie down for sometime until the parents or the doctor comes to take charge.

6. Immunization arrangements in the school:

Records of im­munization given to the child should be noted on the medical Performa. Immunization campaign can be arranged in schools from time to time. Proper coordination among the doctor, the teacher and the parents should always be ensured, with the sense of moral duty towards the children.
