Arthriris is inflammation of synovial joints of the body. The condition is characterized by pain, swelling and loss of function of the joint. Most often affected joints are the large weight bearing joints- hips, knees and ankles.

In science of Yoga, arthritis is not considered as a disease in itself but as one symptom of a widespread metabolic and panic malfunction. There may be different forms of arthritis such as Gout, Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis. Factors leading to arthritis are diet, lack of exercise, mental and emotional stress, faulty life style etc.

Yogic Management

Asana: Bhujangasana, Akarma Dhanurasana, Uthitapadasana, Shashankasana, Dhanurasana, Vajrasana, Surya Namaskar.

Kriya: Neti, Kunjal, Shankhaprakshalana

Pranayama: Nadi Sodhana, Bhastrika

Diet: Whole meal of rice, chapatis, bread etc. may be taken. Boiled vegetables should be preferred but not onions. Salads using green leafy vegetables, tomato, carrot, cucumber etc. should be taken.

Intake of milk and dairy products such as cheese, ghee etc. should be reduced.

Life style: Meals should be taken between 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 5 to 7 p.m. Evening meal should be lighter. During acute inflammatory stage rest is essential.
