Short Notes on Withdrawal of Monsoon in India

Withdrawal or the retreat of the monsoon is a more gradual process than the onset one.

It begins in the western parts of north-western states of India by early September.

I. By mid-October, it withdraws completely from the northern half of the Peninsula.

II. Withdrawal from the southern half of the Peninsula is fairly rapid.

III. By early December, the monsoon has withdrawn from the rest of the country.

IV. Withdrawal takes place from north to south from the first week of December to the first week of January.

V. By this time the rest of the country is already under the influence of the winter monsoon.
