Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh lies to the west of Bihar. It is the most populous state of India. In the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh rice, sugarcane, pulses and maize and the main crops while wheat is the main crop of western Uttar Pradesh.

Western Uttar Pradesh is comparatively dry and irrigation is needed to raise crops. Canals and tube wells are commonly used to provide irrigation. Tractors are widely used for tilling the land. Lucknow is, the capital of the state, and Kanpur is the largest industrial city. Allahabad, Varanasi, Meerut, Mathura, Agra are the main cities of Uttar Pradesh. Holi, Diwali, Dussehra, Id and Christmas are the main festivals in the state. Hindi and Urdu are the chief languages of the people. There are a large number of industries producing textiles, sugar and carpets.

Delhi

Delhi the capital of India, is to the west of Uttar Pradesh. It is surrounded by Haryana on the on the other three sides. Delhi is an ancient city and has many monuments like Qutub Minar, Red fort and Jama Masjid. People from almost every part of India live here. Every festival is celebrated with great pomp and show. The main celebrations of Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti are held in Delhi. Delhi is also the seat of the Central Government.

Haryana

Haryana is known for its cattle, wheat, and handlooms. Dairying and farming are the main occupations. Wheat, rice maize, pulses and sugarcane are the main crops grown. The farmers are hardworking and have adopted modern scientific methods of farming. This has led to an increased production of wheat and rice.

Punjab

Punjab is in the north-west of the Northern Plains. The state is drained by the Satluj, Beas and Ravi rivers. The main crops are wheat, rice, sugarcane and cotton. The farmers are progressive and very hardworking. Punjab and Haryana have made the Green Revolution possible. Punjabi and Hindi are widely spoken. Amritsar is known all over the world for the Golden Temple. Gurupurabs, Baisakhi, Holi, Diwali, Dussehra and Lohri are celebrated here. Punjabis like to eat chapattis, dal, and take milk products like curd and lassi. Bhangra and Giddha are the famous Punjabi folk dances.

Chandigarh

Chandigarh, a modern planned city, is the capital of Punjab and Haryana. It is a union territory. The land in the Northern Plains is very fertile and thus supports a large population. The means of transport are well developed. This has helped in the development of industries in the plains.
