We learn that in India population is counted after every ten years. It is known as census. The population of 36 crores in 1951 has become 86 crores in 1991. It has increased by 50 crores in a period of 40 years. The population of our country is growing very rapidly. It is estimated to have crossed 99 crores in 1998. This rapid increase in the population has made India an over-populated country. It means that in comparison to area and natural resources our population is too much in numbers. The advanced countries of the world have large areas and natural resources and less population. That is why they are rich, while India is poor.
