Some of the most important high mountain regions of India are :

Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh the biggest of the eastern states, is drained by the many tributaries. The state has a very small population. Most of the people are tribal’s and their main occupation is farming and hunting. They live in small groups and speak their own language. They mostly grow rice, maize, millets, tobacco and oilseeds. Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh.

Nagaland

Nagaland has thick forests of bamboo and cane. The Nagas are hardworking farmers and hunters. They are artisans and make beautiful articles from bamboo and cane. They wear colorful dresses and are fond of music and dance. Kohima is the capital of Nagaland.

Meghalaya

Meghalaya means the home of the clouds. Cherrapunji in this state gets the largest amount of annual rainfall in the world. Shilling is the capital of Meghalaya.

Manipur

Manipur is a small state and most of its people live in hills and valleys. They are farmers and produce a variety of food grains, vegetables, fruits, sugarcane and tobacco. The Manipuri dance is well known throughout India. Imphal is the capital of Manipur.

Mizoram

Mizos live in Mizoram and most of them are Christians. The farmers produce rice, maize, potatoes, ginger and tobacco. Aizawl is the capital of Mizoram.

The tribal people of the eastern states of India mostly follow jhum farming. In jhum farming, large tracts of forests are cut and burnt to prepare the land for farming. Crops are grown on that land for two or three years and then field is left. New field are made by clearing forest areas. A large area under forest has thus been destroyed. Now the people are adopting modern methods of cultivation and are giving up this harmful practice.

Bamboo is widely used by the tribal people for making mats and huts. On ceremonial and festive occasions, they usually wear their traditional costumes. Many of them weave their skirts and shawls themselves. The tribal people in these states are very fond of music and dance.
