India is the native place of sugarcane, standing first in the world in respect of its production. We make sugar and other sweetening materials of sugarcane. Bagasses are used in making paper and cardboard.

South India is ideal for its cultivation. Increased irrigational facilities have led to large scale cultivation of sugarcane in North India. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are leading sugarcane producers. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat also produce sugarcane in large quantities.

Agricultural area under sugarcane is 42 lakh hectares and its production is 2992 lakh tonnes in 1999-2000.
