Yesterday while we all were sitting for dinner, I asked my elder brother to drop me to my friends place the next day. The aftermath of this statement was, a heated argument, in which he exclaimed with disgust, “I wish I had left you in that ditch, so that you would not troubled me now.” What followed, was a deep stunning silence, after which we all burst out laughing.

The incident relates to what happened eight years ago. I had gone to attend the marriage of my cousin sister at Bareilly. All the children of our family had collected on this occasion, after a long period of time. So one day in the afternoon, we went to play cricket in the barren ground behind the house. On running after the ball, I saw it disappear near by.

I looked around carefully and at last saw it deep down in a ditch. I thought I could collect it with my hand and therefore, lying down on the ground, I stretched my hand as far as possible. Slowly inching forward, I was just about reaching it, when lo and behold, to my horror I plunged head over heels into the ditch. Recovering from the shock, l sat down to survey my surroundings. My grief knew no bounds. when I saw that what I had thought to be a ball, was actually a hollow plastic shell.

I started screaming for help, but it seemed everyone had turn a deaf ear. The seen; inside the ditch was fearful, with many spiders and lizards in it. As it was getting dark, I started getting terrified, at the thought of spending the night in this well of misery. All my efforts to get out of the well were in vain.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

All of a sudden, I felt something crawling on my feet. Fearing the worst I decided not to move, for I had heard that snakes bite when distracted. However, I gathered courage and peeped down. To my utter relief I saw nothing but a leafy twig, entwined around my ankle. Just then, I heard the sound of my brother calling out to me, I also started shouting on top of my voice. After what seemed eternity, he was able to locate me and I could not hide my joy when I saw him peering down with the help of his torch. He helped me come out, with the rope, which he found nearby. I was weeping inconsolably, while he comforted me. We then returned home to the joy of the entire family.

Everyone was amazed to see me in that state. I ran towards my mother crying and she embraced me. After having a quick bath and putting on fresh clothes, I narrated the incident to all of them. At first they felt sorry for me, but then my cousins started teasing me saying, that I was better in the company of spiders and lizards in the well. Initially I was offended, but seeing that they were just pulling my leg, laughed heartedly. Reliving the incident sends a chill down my spine but at the same time tickles me no end.
