First World War was fought between 1914 to 1918. The war resulted into the victory of Allied powers.

After the war peace treaty was organized in Paris. Germany was held responsible for the war and treaty of Versailles was concluded with Germany.

As per the provisions of the treaty, Germany had to surrender Alsace and Lorraine to France, North Schlesinger to Denmark, Meme to Lithuania, West Prussia and Posen to Poland. The region was to be administered by League of Nation for 15 years, after which the population would be allowed to vote on whether it should belong to France or Germany. Union between Austria and Germany was forbidden.

German’s African colonies ‘were taken away and became mandates under League of Nations supervision. Germans armaments were strictly limited to a maximum of 100,000 troops and no conscription. The war guilt clause fixed the blame for outbreak of war solely on Germany and her allies. Germany was to pay repartees for damage done to the allies.

This was a dictated peace. The German had little choice but to sign the treaty though they objected strongly. This treaty created tension and environment of hatred. The Germans objected to being saddled with the entire blame for outbreak of war. Thus, the treaty considered with the distrust by the Germans.

After sometime, people of Germany started to criticize the Weimer Republic in Germany. They were looking for a leader who could lead the Germany in world. This created back ground for rise of Hitler in Germany. Hitler after coming to power followed aggressive Foreign Policy which ultimately led to World War II. Thus, the Treaty of Versailles shaped the course of history in interwar period.
