A school is a place of learning and acquiring knowledge for a child. It is here that he gets his basic training. Here he joins new associations, comes in contact with boys of different temperaments and forms new ideas and habits. It is here that he prepares himself for the struggle of life. So the right type of education at school is a must for him.

I was hardly five when admitted to a school. It was a primary school. The memory of my first day is still fresh in my mind. It was a small school with eight rooms. There were ten teachers. The headmaster’s office was separate. The school had a compound with a grassy lawn and flower beds.

My father took me to the headmaster’s office and got me admitted in the school. He gave me a packet of toffees for distribution among my classmates.

My class teacher was very gentle. He encouraged me and treated me kindly. I felt a bit nervous in a new environment as the other boys looked at me with strong looks. I had with me the primary book and got my first lesson in alphabet.

Half way, the bell rang. The boys rushed out of their rooms. Some of them gathered round me. They laughed at me and made fun of me. A few sympathised with me and befriended me. This was a novel experience for me.

The last bell went at one in the afternoon. All the boys felt very happy. I also took my bag and hurried back to my house.
