During the period between 1765 and 1785 the British dominion in India did not extend much. The grant of Diwani made the British virtually master of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Besides in the first Anglo-Maratha War and in the first Anglo-Mysore War the English did not fare well. During the period the second Anglo-Mysore War came to an end with the Treaty of Mangalore (1784).

The treaty was a diplomatic victory for Tipu Sultan. It may be said from what has been stated above that though the British could not gain much territory during the period under review it was successful in interfering with the native powers and thereby was successful in projecting their superiority.
