The successful agitation of the European community against the Ilbert Bill was of much importance in the history of political movement in India.

First, the united opposition of the European community against the Ilbert Bill served as an eye-opener to the Indians.

Secondly, the solidarity displayed and the pressure created by the Europeans upon the British government showed clearly that unless the Indians were united they would be unable to wrest any concession from the alien rulers.

Thirdly, the Ilbert Bill agitation had the effect of increasing the bitter feelings between the Indians and the Europeans. Fourthly, Surendranath Baneijee was imprisoned in connection with the Ilbert Bill agitation.
