My father is fond of domestic animals. We have in our house a horse, a cow and a dog. We treat them with care and affection. They are properly fed, comfortably housed and affectionately looked after. They are treated as members of the family.

My love for my cow is very great. When I return home from school, it greets me with a pleasant ‘ma, ma’. It shows its love for me. It begins to lick my hands. I offer it gur which it eats with a relish and gusto. It is of a deep black colour. It is a beautiful animal. It has small pointed horns but is gentle and uses its horns only as a means of defence.

It yields ten seers of milk every-day. Its milk is full of vitamins and is of the best quality. I take cow’s milk, curd and butter every day. They make me strong and healthy. My mother prepares several milk products which render our food rich and delicious.

Cow milk is the best diet for infants and invalids. No other articles of food have the same all-round dietary value as cow’s milk. It is not only palatable but also health giving. Cow-dung and cow’s urine are also, very useful. Cow-dung cakes are used as fuel. Cow-dung is a cheap but strong disinfectant. We plaster our floor with cow-dung. It is also used as manure.

My mother worships it as an incarnation of Bhagavati. She tends it with scrupulous care and devotion.

I love my horse no less than my cow. I enjoy pleasant rides on it. We yoke it to our tonga also. It is my companion and I treat it as a pet. Horse-ride is a pleasant pastime and horse races provide a great amusement.

It is a noble creature. The possession of a horse in our country raises the social status of a man. I value my horse for its speed and physical prowess, beauty and agility.

My horse has a long and arched neck with a flowing mane over it. Its skin is smooth and glossy. Its eyes are large and ears proportionate. Its shape is symmetrical. All these give it a handsome appearance.

It is tamed and trained. It is faithful, useful and devoted to us. It lives on grass, gram, hay, and similar food. It requires to be tended and rubbed daily.

To possess a fine horse is still a mark of distinction. This horse won the first prize in the All India Horse Exhibition last year and brought us honour and glory.

I have a pet dog. I call it Jack. It is my playmate. It greets me with a sweet “bow vow” when I return from school and follows me to the door when I leave home for school in the morning. It is two years old. It is very beautiful to look at. It is smart and active. It runs at an incredible speed. Its body is covered with soft fur. It has a small tail and long ears.

I have in it a loving and faithful companion. It accompanies me when I go out for a walk. It begins to wag its tail when, it sees me. It licks my feet. I like to play with it. I throw a ball. It runs after it and brings it back holding it in its mouth. It can swim. It answers to its name. It is very intelligent. It carries my message to my friend. It runs after cats and barks at strangers and other dogs. It plays with small children and seems to like their company.

At times when I go hunting, it goes with me. It helps me track the game. It runs after hares, foxes, jackals and other small animals and overtakes them. At night, it guards the house. It is very sensitive to sound.

At the slightest sound, it gets startled and begins to bark. A thief dare not come near our house. It has a very strong instinct. Once a fire broke out in our house at mid-night. It saw the danger we were in. It pulled my quilt and woke me up.

It led me to the kitchen. To my great horror, I found that a heap of dry fuel lying there was all ablaze and the flames were rising to the ceiling. I at once, roused from sleep other members of the house. In a few minutes, the fire was brought under. This act of Jack endeared it to us all the more.

I take great care of it. I bathe it with soap every day. I feed it on milk and bread. Occasionally I give it flesh and bones too. It responds to my love. It is a rare animal. Its special qualities are loyalty, sagacity and watchfulness. Its fidelity is unquestionable.
