During the last summer vacation, I had a chance to go to Kolkata. I had heard much about the Zoo of Kolkata. I, therefore, paid a visit to it one day. It is housed in a huge garden. The entry was by two-anna tickets. I purchased a ticket and went in.

First of all, we were greeted by the monkeys. They frisked about, grinned and chattered. There were monkeys with long tails, monkeys with short tails and monkeys with no tail at all. They were of different kinds and colours.

Some had black faces and looked fearful. Some were climbing up trees while others were swinging on the branches. A monkey was looking at his image in a mirror. We offered them parched- gram which they ate greedily. A big monkey stretched out his hand through the enclosure and snatched away a handkerchief from my friend’s pocket only to tear it to pieces.

After enjoying their pranks for some time, we moved on to the cages of lions and tigers. How ferocious they looked! They paced up and down impatiently. They thought perhaps that they would find an opportunity to make good their escape. They gave out terrible roars. I felt frightened and wanted to run away. The keeper threw them big pieces of flesh to eat.

Thereafter I saw an ostrich. It had thin legs and was as tall as a pony. I had never seen such a huge bird before. I proceeded further. My eyes fell upon parrots. They had bright plumes and feathers of various colours-green, red, white, black and blue.

How pretty they all looked! They belonged to all climes and countries. At some distance, there was a big tank of water. Many ducks and swans were swimming in it. It was a fine sight. Close by it, we saw a fish pond. Most lovely fishes swam about in it. They had charming colours and tiny sizes. Some seemed to be made of pure shining gold. They were worth seeing.

Next I saw elephants, hyenas, zebras, hippopotamuses, leopards, giraffes and panthers. It was a treat to see them. The zebra resembled the Indian ass but was far stronger. The rhinoceros had a huge body. It lay in a pool of muddy water. Now and then, he blew out a noisy breath. Then I visited the bears. I saw a white polar bear. The black bears were growling. The reptiles were kept in glass cages. There were cobras, snakes, vipers, serpents and pythons. One of them was more than a dozen feet in length and as thick as the trunk of a tree. Some wriggled about while others lay coiled on the ground.

Then I passed on to fawns and deer. They were grazing in a pasture. The deer had branching horns. Next came wolves, jackals and foxes. Thereafter I passed on to a park. I saw their crocodiles tying in a deep tank and also a pair of seals.

After completing the round, I retraced my steps home-wards. I felt I had quite a profitable and interesting day at the Zoo.
