Man has in different ways tried to appreciate the beauties of nature and solve her mysteries. To a scientist, nature has been a puzzle and a challenge to man. He has tried to read her mysteries and solve her riddles. To Philosophers, nature has been an unfailing source of inspiration He sees in her the presence of God and the divine spirit radiates through its beauty. Goethe is right in saying that Nature is the living, visible garment of God. As an artist he imitates nature and worships it in his songs, in his painting and in his sculpture. Just as a man, he finds in her lap an escape from the worries and anxieties of the world. She consoles his afflicted heart, acts as a balm to soothe the wounded spirit and furnishes him with the moral lessons and reveals the great truths. Her silent and continued work has taught him the gospel of work, patience, perservance and fortitude and to an ordinary man it is a source of joy and happiness.

Nature has not only a variety of scenes but also a varied appeal for man. To the poet, William Wordsworth, “the meanest flower that blooms can give thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears”. To Byron, the fiery and violent aspects of nature appeal while Shelley is enamored of her changing ethereal moods; while Keats is fascinated by her sensuous appeal. To John Ruskin Mountains are the beginning and the end of all natural scenery. A garden full of beautiful flowers to Bacon is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man, without which buildings and palaces are but gross handiwork. Resting quietly under the tree by the side of a singing rivulet brings to the mind a feeling of intense joy in the simple act of living.
