Earthquake is a tremor caused by a violent movement of a part of the earth’s crust. It may occur owing to volcanic eruptions or sudden dislocation in the rock structure. Tremor or quivering of the earth with a few severe shocks on earth takes place in an earthquake. It does not last for a longer period than a few minutes.

Earthquake causes damage to large structural constructions, and human life and property. Trees are uprooted. Tanks and rivers are affected with unusual commotion. It is better to remain in the open for the inmates of a high-rise building during the earthquake. In India, earthquake created havoc in Bihar in 1934. In Japan, it is more or less a common phenomenon. It is a natural calamity. It is sudden, and hence no precaution is possible. It can happen at any hour of the day or at night or during any season of the year at any place.
