Salt is a white transparent crystalline compound. It is found in the rocks of mines. Rock salt is reddish in colour. It is seldom used in our everyday life. We use refined salt in our food. Edible salt is prepared from sea water. Sea water is boiled or dried up in the sun. During boiling, the liquid portion rises up as vapour, leaving behind the salt. This salt is then refined, and made fit for human consumption.

Salt gives taste to our food. It helps in digestion. It purifies our blood and is useful to our health in many ways. Salt is used in the preparation of medicines. It is also used in the preservation of food, such as meat, etc.
